Radio, with pensioners is not to be confused with 80s musical style icon Radio With Pictures. For a start none of our presenters would be ever be caught wearing a tutu onscreen while sneeringly deadpanning an overly florid script. Deadpanning is for ninnies. The all new Radio, with pensioners is something quite different. And new. And innovative. Okay, it’s a podcast. A podcast featuring two veterans of stage, screen and print – Jeff and Doug. Together and separately, they’ve written hundreds of hours of television scriptery, hundreds of thousands of words in newspapers and magazines and dozens of valueless cheques, back when cheques were an important part of sustaining a life of largesse and frivolity. So what’s it about, this podcast? Well, it started 40 years ago, when Jeff and Doug turned up at Wellington Access Radio with a script. They were allowed to record it, the resulting 30 minutes were broadcast and some people listened. Invited back and emboldened, Jeff and Doug threw caution to the wind and managed to insult every other group involved in Access Radio as well as people in other countries before the red light went out, the producer came in and handed over a half-recorded tape and a burgeoning career in radio ceased to burgeon. Until now.
